Outreach Ministries

4-Cents-a-Meal
Once a quarter, we collect the 4-Cents-a-Meal offering during the worship services. 25% of the money collected is used to support hunger-fighting efforts in the local community, and 75% is sent to the Shenandoah Presbytery for distribution to regional and national hunger-fighting efforts.

Backpack Buddies
Once a month, we collect different shelf-stable food items, such as juice boxes, granola bars, and fruit cups. During the school year, Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church prepares weekly backpacks of food for distribution to Clarke County Public Schools students who receive free or reduced school meals to provide them with nutritious food over the weekend. During the summer, we donate the food items to the FISH Food Bank for distribution to local families.

Community Meal
On the 4th Thursday of each month, Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church hosts a free community meal, open to all. The member churches of the Clarke County Ministerial Association share responsibility for providing and serving the food. One month each year, Berryville Presbyterian organizes food for the dinner and provides volunteers to serve and clean up.

Clarke County Food Distribution
Once a year, we provide volunteers to unload food delivery from the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, organize it into orders, and hand out the orders.

FISH Food Bank
Throughout the year, we provide money and food donations to the FISH Food Bank.

Easter & Christmas Alternate Giving
In addition to buying and dedicating lilies at Easter and poinsettias at Christmas, we offer our congregation alternate giving opportunities. Recent alternate giving choices have included school meals through the Clarke County Nutrition Alliance and Clarke County Education Foundation, bags of groceries through FISH Food Bank, and buckets of cleaning supplies for disaster recovery through Church World Service.

Christmas Families
Through Clark County Social Services, members of the congregation “adopt” individuals to provide with new, wrapped Christmas presents, selected based on their wish lists. Last year, we adopted 29 individuals.

WATTS
During the winter months, the Winchester Area Temporary Thermal Shelter (WATTS) program, operates a night shelter which changes location each week. For one week in January, the shelter is located in the Ruritan Building at the Clarke County Fairgrounds. Member churches of the Clarke County Ministerial Association share the responsibility for setting up and breaking down the shelter and for providing and serving a hot dinner one evening and a hot breakfast the next morning.

Coldest Night of the Year. WATTS’ largest fundraiser is a 5K walk through downtown Winchester in late February. Over the past several years, our teams have raised approximately $6,000 for WATTS.

iCARE Ministry
Through the Shenadoah Presbytery, we participate in supporting an orphanage run by the Illubabor Bethel Synod of the Ethiopian Presbyterian Church, helping to proving shelter, medical care, food, clothing, and education to Ethiopoian children.

Emergency Community Assistance
Through benevolence funding, we offer emergency financial support to individuals needing assistance in our community.
